Sending a child with PCD off to college brings real excitement and real nerves, often in the same hour. The main job in the year or two before is a gradual handoff of the daily responsibility from you to your almost-adult child. Gradual is the important word. It does not happen all at once, and it should not.
How do you reach full independence with medication and refills?
Before your child leaves home, make sure they can request a refill on their own, know their dose and schedule by heart, know which pharmacy to use near school, and know what to do if a refill runs late. Test all of this while you are still around to catch a slip, not after move-in day.
Should you register with the college's disability or accessibility office?
Yes, register early, before anything goes wrong. Most colleges have an office that arranges accommodations much like a high school 504 plan: food access outside dining hours, housing adjustments, or flexibility on attendance during a medical issue. It is far easier to have these in place and not need them.
What role does the campus health center play?
The campus health center should know your child exists before there is an emergency. Encourage your child to introduce themselves early and bring a one-page summary of the condition, their medications, and their specialist's contact information. A five-minute visit now can save a scared, confused phone call later.
What about dorm and dining life with PCD?
Dorm life works with a few practical habits: shelf-stable snacks in the room, a small fridge for anything that needs it, and phone reminders for doses during the first weeks when every routine gets thrown off at once.
How do you build a support network away from home?
Your child should tell at least one roommate or close friend about PCD and what to do in an emergency. They do not need to tell everyone. They need to tell someone.
I'm a person living with PCD, not your doctor. Everything here is to help you understand and ask good questions; your child's metabolic team makes the medical decisions. Every campus handles accommodations differently, so confirm the details with each school.
