What Should You Know About Elementary School With PCD?

Elementary school is often where PCD becomes a little less hands-on for you day to day, and a little more about making sure the right adults have the right information. The goal at this stage is a small, reliable support network at school. You do not have to do everything yourself.

Why should you start with the school nurse?

Start with the school nurse because they are the person who will actually give a dose or make the call on a bad day. Share your child's care plan, emergency card, and dose schedule with them directly. Ask how medication is handled at your specific school. Policies vary more than you would expect.

What should you share with the classroom teacher?

Give the classroom teacher four things: what the condition means, what to watch for, what your child may need, and who to call.

Does my child need a 504 plan or an IEP?

A 504 plan is worth setting up for most children with PCD; an IEP usually is not needed for PCD alone. A 504 plan is a written agreement with the school that guarantees things like snack access, bathroom breaks, and medication at school. An IEP is for learning needs, which PCD does not cause by itself. Ask about a 504 plan even when things are going smoothly. That is actually the easiest time to set one up.

How should field trips and special days be handled?

Ask to hear about field trips, class parties, and schedule changes ahead of time, because those are the days most likely to throw off eating. A small emergency snack kit that lives in your child's backpack all year is a simple safety net a lot of parents rely on.

How can you help your child understand PCD at this age?

By early elementary school most kids can learn a simple version: "My body needs its medicine and needs to eat on a schedule so I do not feel yucky." That is enough. It lets them start speaking up in small ways, like asking for a snack when they feel off, without needing the biology yet.

I'm a person living with PCD, not your doctor. Everything here is to help you understand and ask good questions; your child's metabolic team makes the medical decisions.
